When outdoor temperatures drop, the warmth you pay for can slip right through gaps, thin spots, and poorly sealed areas of your home. Keeping heat inside isn’t just about turning up the thermostat — it’s about tightening the building envelope, managing airflow, and using smart habits. Here’s how to retain more indoor heat and stay comfortable while easing the load on your heating system.

Understand Your Building Envelope

The building envelope — your walls, attic, windows, doors, floors, and foundation — separates conditioned indoor air from the outdoors. Heat naturally moves from warm to cold through conduction, convection, and radiation. The more pathways heat finds through cracks, thin insulation, and glass, the faster your home loses comfort.

By tightening the envelope, you slow that heat flow. Air sealing blocks drafts and stack-effect leaks, while insulation resists conductive heat loss. Together, they reduce the amount of energy needed to maintain a cozy temperature and keep indoor warmth from escaping in the first place.

Air Sealing vs. Insulation: Different Jobs

Air sealing stops moving air; insulation slows heat transfer. You need both. Focus first on sealing: caulk and foam around window/door trim, utility penetrations, and top-floor ceiling openings where warm air rises and leaks into the attic. Add door sweeps to close the gap at thresholds and weatherstrip around doors for a tight fit.

Once major leaks are addressed, insulation performs far better. Window treatments such as cellular shades, thermal curtains, and temporary window film reduce radiant and conductive losses through glass. For doors, a quality door sweep and proper latch alignment prevent steady heat loss and deter cold drafts at floor level.

Mind Hidden Bypasses and Duct Leaks

Warm air escapes through attic bypasses — openings around chimneys, recessed lights, and attic hatches — which accelerate the stack effect. Seal these before adding insulation. Leaky ducts can also waste heat by dumping it into attics or crawlspaces. Tightening and sealing ducts helps ensure the heat your furnace or heat pump produces actually reaches your rooms.

Use Fans and Thermostats Wisely

Exhaust fans and whole-house fans can pull warm air out quickly. Use kitchen and bath fans sparingly in winter and shut them off once moisture clears. Keep ceiling fans on low in reverse (clockwise) to gently push warm air down without creating a chilly breeze, and avoid large overnight thermostat setbacks if they lead to long reheat times and cold surfaces.

Fireplaces, Ventilation, and Balanced Comfort

An open fireplace can draw significant heated air up the chimney. Keep the damper fully closed when not in use, add a tight-fitting glass door, and consider a chimney balloon or top-sealing damper to limit standby losses. If you burn a fire, crack a nearby window slightly to supply combustion air so the fireplace doesn’t pull warm air from the entire house.

Healthy ventilation still matters. Aim for controlled, balanced fresh air rather than unplanned drafts. Over-sealing without planned ventilation can lead to stale air and moisture problems. Work toward fewer uncontrolled air changes while maintaining indoor air quality through targeted ventilation and humidity management.
