How Often to Replace and What Affects It

Replacement frequency depends on your home’s conditions and filter type. As a rule of thumb: fiberglass filters often need changing every 30 days; standard pleated filters last about 60–90 days; larger media filters (4–5 inch) can go 6–12 months. If you have multiple pets, recent remodeling, allergies, or live in a dusty area, expect to replace more frequently.

Before you begin: turn the system off at the thermostat for safety and to prevent the blower from pulling unfiltered air. Locate the filter slot at the return grille or at the furnace/air handler cabinet. Note the airflow arrow direction on the frame; it should point toward the blower. Slide the old filter out carefully, inspect for excessive dust or collapse, and insert the new filter with the arrow aligned. Reseat the access door firmly and restart the system.

Use Reminders or a Filter Plan

It’s easy to forget filter changes. Set calendar reminders, use a smart-home alert, or enroll in a filter subscription so replacements arrive on schedule. Consistent swaps prevent clogs that cause pressure drop, noisy operation, and comfort issues.

Room Fans Don’t Replace Filtration

Ceiling and room fans can help circulate air, but they do not capture particles. Reliable filtration happens at the furnace filter. Keep fans for comfort if you like, but prioritize timely filter changes to protect your equipment and lungs.
